*A story about recognition before the mind catches up*
When his grandmother told him she had known, the very first moment she saw his grandfather across a crowded market, that she would marry him, young Rui assumed she was exaggerating, the way old stories often get polished smooth over the years.
"You can't actually know something like that immediately," he said. "You didn't even know his name yet."
"I didn't know his name," she agreed. "I didn't know anything about him at all — not his work, his family, his temperament. By every reasonable measure, I knew nothing. And yet I knew something else entirely, something underneath all of that, the instant I saw him laughing with his friends across the stalls."
"What does that even mean? Knowing nothing and knowing something at the same time?"
She considered how to explain it. "There are two different kinds of knowing, Rui. There's the slow kind — facts gathered over time, proof accumulated patiently. And there's another kind, faster, that arrives before the facts do, in your chest instead of your mind. I didn't yet know if he was kind, or reliable, or right for me in any way I could have listed on paper. But something in me recognized something in him, instantly, the way you recognize a familiar song after only two notes, long before you could explain why."
"Were you ever wrong, trusting that fast kind of knowing?"
"Once or twice, with other people, yes," she admitted. "The fast knowing isn't infallible. But with your grandfather, the slow knowledge spent sixty years confirming exactly what the fast knowledge had already, somehow, understood in a single glance across a market."
Rui never fully understood it until years later, meeting someone himself, in an ordinary doorway, and feeling, for one disorienting second, something arrive in his chest faster than his mind could possibly justify.
