A photo restorer in an old city block had a small, quiet specialty: repairing burned and water-damaged photographs for families who could no longer remember exactly who had been standing where.
A woman once brought her a mantel photograph with one corner burned cleanly away, the figures around it smiling, undisturbed, as though the fire had asked permission before it took only what it came for.
"Can you fill it in?" the woman asked. "Guess what might have been there? I'll pay extra."
The restorer studied the burn under her lamp — too deliberate, too clean-edged to be an accident, a candle that got too close. This was a fire that had been held to the corner on purpose, by a hand that wanted exactly that much gone and not one inch more.
"I could invent a figure to put there," the restorer said, "but it would be my invention, not your history. I'd be guessing at a stranger's posture, a stranger's face, dressing up a guess as a memory. That's not restoration. That's just a different kind of erasing."
"Then what do I do?"
"You find out who it was. Ask the people who'd know before they're gone too. And if you find the name, you don't put a face in the burn. You write the name underneath it instead, on the back, or even on the front, small. Let the gap stay a gap. A named gap isn't empty anymore — it's just shaped like absence instead of like a person, which is sometimes closer to the truth of how we actually carry someone we never got to meet."
The woman did exactly that. She spent a summer asking the kind of questions families don't usually ask out loud, and found, eventually, a name — a brother, eleven months old, a fever, a corner burned away by grief that had no other shape to take. She wrote his name on the back of the photograph in pencil, light enough to erase if it ever felt wrong, dark enough to read.
She never had the corner filled in. The burned patch stayed exactly as it was, but it didn't look like damage to her anymore. It looked, finally, like a room with a name on the door, waiting, after all those years, simply to be acknowledged rather than restored.
